Accepting Applications for FSE Student Government Association

It is my privilege to inform you that the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education (FSE) is accepting applications for a seat on the Executive Board for the Student Government Association. Elected Officers must be able to serve a full term from May 1, 2013 - April 30, 2014. The Student Government Association will be comprised of Fischler graduate students and will serve as the voice of the student body while representing the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education.

As a leader within the field of education, within the classroom, and within your community, I encourage you to review the Application here and apply for one of the following elected positions: President, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Vice President of Judicial Affairs, Vice President of Online Affairs, Treasurer, and Secretary.  Please submit your application, typed response to the application questions, and your biography and photograph via email to gramirez@nova.edu. The instructions are provided within the attached application. All applications must be submitted no later than February 22, 2013 and elections will take place from April 2nd to April 15th, 2013.

About Us

President

The Student Government Association (SGA) President for the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education administers and enforces all laws of the student body. Marie E. Severe is a doctoral student in the Organizational Leadership program with a concentration in Human Resources & Development. Marie obtained her Master’s Degree in Management Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University in 2004 with Honors and her B.S. from Palm Beach Atlantic University in Computer Information Systems in 2002. She has been a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon International Honor Society for Computing and Information Disciplines since 2004. Marie has obtained training in SQL Server 2008 and 2012. She plans to work as a SQL Database Developer, as she continues to obtain more database developmental skills. She enjoys problem solving and would love to help a company reach its technical goals.

Marie has worked for Palm Beach County as a Quality Assurance Analyst in Software Technology. For AutoNation, a Fortune 500 company in Fort Lauderdale, she worked as a Software Business Analyst. For Teleperformance, another Fortune 500 company located in South Florida, she worked as a Hardware and Software Technical Analyst. In addition, she has taught Business Management and Technical skills, both online and on-site at several post-secondary and vocational educational institutions, such as Northwood University, Palm Beach State College, Kaplan University, Lincoln College of Technology and South University. She is currently looking for more opportunity.

She is the church webmaster, a Sunday School teacher, and the Youth Department Vice President at a Bethlehem Baptist Haitian Church. She served as a youth mentor in the defunct Take Stock in Children of Palm Beach County. Marie was born in Haiti, but grew up in the United States. Her short-term goals include owning her own business as an IT and education-related consultant with her supportive and encouraging husband; in addition, she would like to continue teaching and to have the opportunity to conduct research for a university. Her immediate family consists of ever-encouraging husband, a cheerful toddler-aged son and a darling newborn son. She plans to open a non-for-profit organization in both the US and Haiti and helping people put their shattered lives back together, as well. She is thankful to serve as President for her constituents. Marie is a devout Christian.

Vice President of Legislative Affairs

The Abraham S. Fischler School of Education Student Government Association Vice President of Legislative Affairs advises the Officers of the Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Board and Senate on current legislation that is highly relevant to graduate students at Nova Southeastern University and the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education (Fischler), including legislation pending in Tallahassee for the State of Florida and Washington, DC for federal legislation.

Cleones Fleurima is a doctoral candidate from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He obtained a B.A. in History from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL in 2004. While attending the University of Florida, Cleones was heavily involved in working with the Dean of Student Office as well as various student organizations. His experience at the University of Florida has led him to pursue a career in higher education. Cleones earned a Masters degree in Higher Education Administration from Argosy University in 2009.

Cleones has extensive professional experience within the education sector. He served as a high school teacher in Sarasota, Florida. Cleones also has teaching experience abroad in Seoul, South Korea. Cleones has worked at Kaplan University and is currently employed at Nova Southeastern University within the Enrollment and Student Services (ESS) department.

Cleones enjoys traveling around the Caribbean with his family. He also likes to learn and experience different cultures and the great outdoors.

Vice President of Judicial Affairs

The Vice President of Judicial Affairs for the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education (FSE) will be responsible for submitting, by established deadline dates, all reports or inquiries to the President of the Student Government Association. Additionally the Vice President of Judicial Affairs serves as the key representative to serve and provide input to any judicial matter related to FSE students.

Gillian McFarlane-Ossmann is a doctoral student in the Educational Leadership program. Gillian graduated from culinary school in 2005 and qualified/certified as a chef that same year. Deciding to further her vocation in a different field of employment, she completed both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree at Florida International University in Liberals Arts and Hospitality Management, respectively, in 2006 and 2011.

Gillian is engaged as a wedding planner and also as a teacher. She lectures in the Continuing Education Program at Broward College; her classes include Wedding & Event Planning, Cake Decorating, as well as Culinary Arts for Kids. As an educator and future educator, she is very passionate about not just learning and teaching, but also in devising strategies to bring out the best in all of the persons that is ever blessed to have as students.

She is married and the mother of two year old twin boys. An appropriate acronym for this ebullient young woman would be WTF. Of course, given as applied to her, the letters would mean "World Traveled Foodie!" Her unbridled passion for travel is matched only by her strong interest in "all things food."

Vice President of Online Affairs

The Vice President of Online Affairs is the representative of all online learners at Abraham S. Fischler School of Education (FSE). The VP of Online Affairs is tasked with advocating for effective and efficient online learning environments and open professor-student online communication for all students.

Nova Lishon-Savarino is a doctoral student in the Instructional Technology and Distance Education (ITDE) and Higher Education Leadership programs. In December 2012, Nova earned her Master’s degree in ITDE from Nova Southeastern University. She graduated in May 2011 from Nova Southeastern University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Dance (Minor in Theatre) and a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology (Minor in Psychology). Nova graduated in 2008 from Broward College with an Associates of Arts degree (with High Honors, Honors Institute, and PTK). She attended Laurel Springs School and graduated from high school in 2007 at age 14.

Nova is an Adjunct Professor at Broward College and teaches Developmental Mathematics. Recently, she began working as an Interim Substitute Teacher for Broward Schools and will now begin her first year as a full-time teacher at Broward Virtual School. She wants to continue to inspire students to be successful and share her knowledge and understanding of technology through application of distance learning projects through academic studies. More specifically, she hopes to gain knowledge and develop professional skills related to connecting the bridge gap between secondary and higher education.

Nova was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her passions include dancing (18+ years) and figure skating (15+ years; including 4 State Championship titles). In her 20 years of life, she has engaged in numerous community service activities. She has served as Co-Chair on NSU’s KDP Shark KNX Mentoring Committee (2012-2013), and is currently the Kappa Delta Pi, Omega Theta Chapter President. With the continued support of her family, friends, and God, Nova looks to expand her knowledge and mentor others interested in learning about distance education trends and best practices.

Secretary

The Abraham S. Fischler School of Education Student Government Association Secretary is elected by the student body, keeps minutes of all meetings, maintains the records and assists the presiding officer during meetings, and explains the pending business when called upon.

Marline Whigham started her nursing career by obtaining a Diploma- Licensed Practical Nurse in1990 from Sheridan Vocational; Associate of Science Degree in Nursing 1995 from Broward College, Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing 2002 from Florida Atlantic University, and Master of Science Degree in Nursing/Education 2007 from the University of Phoenix. She has also obtained an LNCC in 2009 from the University of Central Florida.

Marline has extensive professional experience as a critical care nurse. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor for the College of Nursing (CON) in the Entry Level Nursing Program at NSU on the Kendall Student Education Center (SEC) campus. Marline currently teaches several courses including Foundation of Pathophysiology, Adult Concepts of Primary Care lll, The Nurse as a Leader and Trends in nursing, and Nursing Practicum.

Marline has been married for 31 years and is a proud mother of three children: two daughters and one son, ages 27, 25, and 23. Marline received an educational grant (HEPEG) for leadership development from Nova Southeastern University’s Abraham S. Fischler School of Education, and has attended the International Leadership Conference-The Chair Academy in April. Currently, Marline, is working on a research project with two colleagues “Peer to Peer Mentoring in the Simulation Lab Setting.”

Treasurer

The Abraham S. Fischler School of Education Student Government Association Treasurer is elected by the student body, oversees SGA funds and expenditures with fiscal responsibility.

Norah King is a doctoral candidate from Labelle, Florida. She received a B.B.A. in Human Resource Management from Baker College, Flint, MI. in 2007. While attending Jones International College in Centennial, CO, she earned two Master of Education degrees with cum laude honors 2011. Her duel Master’s in Secondary Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction with Teacher Licensure and another in Adult Education, e-Technology & Instructional Design have supported her Organizational Leadership doctoral candidacy in the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education at Nova Southeastern University.

Norah has extensive professional experience as Assistant Education Director at a large correctional facility, an appointed State of Florida Chief GED examiner, nationally certified charter facilitator for Thinking for a Change and speaker- advocate for autism related disorders. She also shares her unique skills as a member of Kappa Delta Pi International Education Honor Society and the Correctional Education Association.

As a United States Navy Veteran and mother to 3 grown children, Norah has a strong sense of community service including as a certified Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) Captain/First Responder and founding member of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C. Norah enjoys attending Tampa Rays baseball games, listening to world music and relaxing meditation. She is proud of her Irish heritage and works hard to represent Nova Southeastern University in a positive way.

Faculty Advisor

The faculty advisor is responsible to provide guidance and coordinate the efforts of the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education Student Government Association.

Dr. Daniel H. Markarian is a first generation Armenian-American and native Floridian. He received his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Social Studies Education in 1986 and Master of Science in Secondary Social Studies Education in 1989 from the University of Miami. Dan has extensive experience participating and leading student government organizations in several academic environments. Interest in supporting new teachers developed early during a career teaching Social Studies and Adult Education in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach School Districts.

Dan earned a doctorate in Educational/ Organizational Leadership in 2006 from the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education. His dissertation was to develop an effective school based, six-part new teacher support program to increase retention and promote mastery. He gained administrative experience in Seminole School District with responsibilities including student discipline, building operations, security and transportation. Dr. Markarian joined the Graduate Teacher Education Program at the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education at Nova Southeastern University as a Social Studies Program Professor in 2008 and supports improvements in education through effective mentoring.

Fischler School Names Inaugural SGA Executive Board 
On February 15, 2012, the FSE SGA Executive Board petitioned for full recognition and acceptance within the Nova Southeastern University PanSGA. The FSE SGA was admitted with full acceptance and is now the 18th SGA to be recognized within the PanSGA.

NSU – Tobacco and Smoke Free Campus
As of July 1, 2012 NSU joined nearly 400 U.S. colleges and universities to become a tobacco and smoke-free campus.
NSU faculty, staff and students who want to quit smoking continue to be encouraged to take advantage of the university’s multiple smoking cessation programs and resources which are available year-round.
NSU adopted the new policy to demonstrate its concern for the health of the campus community – for both smokers and non-smokers. For additional information visit www.nova.edu/tobacco-free.

Summer Conference 2013 - Disney's Contemporary Resort
There will be an FSE Student Government Association Senate Interest Meeting during the week of July 14th, 2013 in the Convention Center. All are welcome to attend.

We are currently accepting applications for a 2013-2014 seat on the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education Student Government Association executive board. It is my pleasure to invite you to an Information Meeting to discuss the Student Government Association and the executive board positions (President, Vice President of Online Affairs, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Vice President of Judicial Affairs, Treasurer, and Secretary). Please stop by the Flight Deck on January 31st, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Enjoy a beverage and appetizer and fill out an application to run for an executive board position.
